Job Description: Excavator Operator for Road Building


Job Summary:

The Excavator Operator for Road Building is responsible for operating heavy machinery to excavate, grade, and prepare sites for logging operation. This role involves working closely with the logging team to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to specifications. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience operating excavators, a strong understanding of road building techniques, and a commitment to safety and quality.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Machine Operation:

    • Operate excavators to perform tasks such as digging, trenching, and grading for road construction.

    • Ensure precise and accurate excavation according to project plans and specifications.

    • Perform routine maintenance checks and ensure the excavator is in good working condition.

  • Site Preparation:

    • Clear and prepare construction sites by removing trees, debris, and other obstructions.

    • Excavate and level areas for roadbeds, drainage systems, and other infrastructure components.

    • Work with other operators and laborers to set up and lay out road grades and alignments.

    • Build forwarder roads to reduce wear and tear on equipment, and improve productivity.

  • Safety and Compliance:

    • Adhere to all safety regulations and protocols to ensure a safe working environment.

    • Conduct daily safety inspections of equipment and work areas.

    • Report any safety concerns or equipment malfunctions to the Site Supervisor.

  • Collaboration and Communication:

    • Communicate effectively with the construction team, including supervisors, engineers, and other operators.

    • Follow instructions and feedback from the Site Supervisor to ensure project goals are met.


  • Documentation and Reporting:

    • Maintain accurate records of work performed, including hours of operation, materials used, and site conditions.

    • Complete daily logs and reports as required by the Site Supervisor.

    • Assist in the preparation of site progress reports.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational training or certification in heavy equipment operation preferred.

  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience operating excavators in road construction or a similar field.

  • Skills:

    • Proficient in operating excavators and other heavy machinery.

    • Strong understanding of road construction processes and techniques.


    • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.

    • Good communication and teamwork abilities.

  • Certifications: Valid driver's license; heavy equipment operator certification preferred.

  • Physical Requirements: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, standing, and operating machinery for extended periods.

Working Conditions:

  • Outdoor work in various weather conditions.

  • Exposure to noise, dust, and heavy machinery.

Work Schedule and Perks

We offer various work schedules to meet your lifestyle. The typical schedule we offer is 7 days on and 7 days off. However, we are flexible in the length of the schedule. We have offered 14, 21 days on, and 7, 14, 21 days off. There are also opportunities for part time positions on an as needed basis.
